  {"id":18034,"date":"2017-05-01T07:59:14","date_gmt":"2017-05-01T11:59:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/news\/article.php?ArticleID=18034"},"modified":"2017-05-01T07:59:14","modified_gmt":"2017-05-01T11:59:14","slug":"18034_from-a-student-s-perspective-a-photo-journalism-exhibit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/arts\/2017\/05\/01\/18034_from-a-student-s-perspective-a-photo-journalism-exhibit\/","title":{"rendered":"From a Student\u2019s Perspective: A Photo Journalism Exhibit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The typically bone dry white walls of The Morehead Lounge popped to life on Wednesday April 26<sup>th<\/sup>, 2017 thanks to the efforts of Professor Thomas Franklin\u2019s Intro to Photojournalism class [JOUR288].&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--> <\/p>\n<p>Over the course of the spring 2017 semester, students used Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ State\u2019s campus to document and capture the moments which defined the daily lives of students, educators and alumni for weekly assignments ranging from lighting, to exposure and composition.<\/p>\n<p>The Photo Exhibit, which featured the work of 18 students spread across 32 large unique canvas prints, filled the usual empty walls.&nbsp; \u201cThese photos are very representative of life at our University,\u201d says Professor Franklin in a congratulatory manner to a filled reception gathering.<\/p>\n<p>Junior Shane O\u2019Neill explains, \u201cthere was typically a project assigned every week.&nbsp; This picture is of my girlfriend,\u201d he says while pointing to a dark horizontal canvas illuminated by colored Christmas light and a beam of sun racing in through an open window onto a studying college student.&nbsp; \u201cThis was chosen from about 200 photos taken that day.&nbsp; We had to use a combination of artificial light and natural light.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For each canvas image there was a title and short description presenting the work. The still subjects included wildlife, profiles, drag queens and in true millennial fashion, a college student in heels strutting a cement pathway taking a selfie of herself titled simply: \u201cSelfie.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Those in attendance included some of Franklin\u2019s colleagues from the Bergen Country Record, who during his time as a staff photographer captured some of New York\u2019s most iconic moments before joining the Journalism faculty at Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ State in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Graduating senior Amanda Williams reflects over punch and snacks, \u201cEveryone worked very hard and it\u2019s great to see our finished projects come to life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Behind Williams was Tara George, a humble and soft spoken professor, who like Franklin joined the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ State faculty after a career at publications including the NY Daily News.&nbsp; She currently oversees the student run newspaper, The Montclarion, and teaches a feature writing class which partnered with the photo exhibit to showcase the work across the University\u2019s multiple media platforms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey wrote feature stories,\u201d explains George, \u201cand some of these have already been published in the Montclarion.&nbsp; My students are here to see their work and show support.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Photo Exhibit will be on display in the lower level of Morehead Hall until May 12<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Morehead Hall &#8211; April 26th &#8211; May 12th<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":23,"featured_media":118034,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"inline_featured_image":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[11],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-18034","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-235_school-of-communication-and-media"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/arts\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/18034","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/arts\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/arts\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/arts\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/23"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/arts\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=18034"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/arts\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/18034\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/arts\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/118034"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/arts\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=18034"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/arts\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=18034"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/arts\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=18034"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
