{"id":25,"date":"2018-03-13T13:22:58","date_gmt":"2018-03-13T13:22:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/volunteer-center\/?page_id=25"},"modified":"2023-01-24T14:39:27","modified_gmt":"2023-01-24T19:39:27","slug":"mlk-day","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/volunteer-center\/service\/mlk-day\/","title":{"rendered":"MLK Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>EECO AmeriCorps members and Bonner AmeriCorps members always serve on Martin Luther King Day, but it had not been held as a campus-wide event at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ until January 19, 2015. EECO AmeriCorps members Courtney Moore and Robin Paoletti, the co-coordinators of the event, encountered many obstacles, but their diligence and can do attitudes really brought the campus community together with over 235 volunteers participating in the day\u2019s events!<\/p>\n<p>Volunteers made over 900 sandwiches for local soup kitchens and wrote personal messages of gratitude and hope for 800 U.S. soldiers overseas.<br \/>\nIn the past six years, MLK Day volunteers served over 6,000 hours bettering our campus and the New Jersey area &#8211; now that&#8217;s a huge impact!<\/p>\n<p>This annual service event invites Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ students, faculty, alumni and local community members to serve the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ community and surrounding areas as we continue to honor of civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr.\u2019s lifelong dedication to justice, equality and service for the greater good.<\/p>\n<div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">What We&apos;ve Done<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<h3>Off-campus sites offered diverse causes, including:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Healthcare access (MedShare)<\/li>\n<li>Elder care (Waterview Center and Canterbury Village)<\/li>\n<li>Fire prevention and safety (the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Fire Department)<\/li>\n<li>Advancement of people with disabilities (Cerebral Palsy of North Jersey)<\/li>\n<li>Hunger (supermarket can drive)<\/li>\n<li>Empowerment of people living with HIV and AIDS (Hispanic Multi-Purpose Services Center)<\/li>\n<li>Transition from homelessness (Covenant House).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>On-campus projects included:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches<\/li>\n<li>Writing cards for U.S. soldiers overseas<\/li>\n<li>Reorganizing the on-campus Red Hawk Pantry<\/li>\n<li>Blanket making<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Virtual service included:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Messages of Hope for Mental Health Awareness (Aspire Tomorrow)<\/li>\n<li>Writing thank you to frontline workers (#Thousands of Differences)<\/li>\n<li>Lending your voice (VocalID)<\/li>\n<li>Write letters and sending photos to seniors &amp; active service members<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">MLK Day of Service 2022<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<p class=\"prpl-button-row\"><span class=\"prpl-button\"><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/01\/18\/mlk-inspires-a-day-of-service\/?utm_source=carousel&amp;utm_campaign=homepage_features&amp;utm_medium=montclair.edu&amp;utm_content=1\" target=\"_blank\">MLK 2022 at MSU<\/a><\/span><\/p> <\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"prpl-drawer open\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">MLK Day of Service 2023<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<p class=\"prpl-button-row\"><span class=\"prpl-button\"><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2023\/01\/18\/a-day-of-giving-back\/\" target=\"_blank\">MLK 2023 at MSU<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p><em>Last Modified: Tuesday, January 24, 2023 2:39 pm<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>EECO AmeriCorps members and Bonner AmeriCorps members always serve on Martin Luther King Day, but it had not been held as a campus-wide event at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ until January 19, 2015.
